First Diploma in Hotel Management with English Language

The 'First Diploma' programme is an extensive course that develops the student's English Language ability through the exploration of content and activities directly related to the Hospitality Industry. There is also a strong focus on building the learning and communication skills necessary for success in the New Zealand tertiary study environment.

Age Requirements: Students must be 17 ¨ö years of age to commence the course.

Selection: Selection for the course will not only be on the basis of academic merit, but each individual will be assessed during the application procedure.

High School Leavers: Minimum of Year 12 secondary school education (NCEA Level 2)

Mature Age Students: The School accepts mature age students with a satisfactory level of related industry experience. Each applicant is assessed on an individual basis.

Recognition of Prior Learning: The School has a policy of recognizing appropriate prior learning. Specific subjects or part of the course may be granted exemption status.

International Students: Must provide a certificate representing satisfactory completion of twelve years of education. Students require English language skills to an IELTS score of 6.0 on the Academic Level , or a minimum TOEFL score of 550.



Degree in Applied Hospitality & Tourism Management

Bachelor of Applied Hospitality & Tourism Management

Following the completion of their Diploma, students may be eligible to enter a six month degree course extension which has been accredited by the NZQA. To obtain a similar degree from another institution would require an additional 12-18 months of further study.

On graduation, students will receive a Bachelor of Applied Hospitality & Tourism Management .

The strong operational and management focus of the diploma course and the strategic and analytical focus of the degree are somewhat unique, and offer the combination that employers are looking for in their graduate recruiting.

Advanced Managerial Business Evaluation: the senior hospitality professional is charged with achieving the financial and other performance goals of the organization.

Strategic Management: to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of theories, concepts and the implementation processes of strategic management.

Strategic Marketing: provides an understanding of strategic concepts and implementing marketing strategies fundamental to the core of marketing management and decision making.

Eco Tourism Management: the potential of unbounded and uncontrolled tourism enterprise to irreparably damage the social environmental and economic fibre of many societies has seen the need to manage tourism within an ecological framework.

Event Management: unique hospitality events require that students address major trends and successful business practices in event management.

Applied Research Project: the ability to conceive, design, implement and report on an appropriately constructed research subject.

The Degree has less contact hours than Diploma semesters but places greater emphasis on independent learning, analytical thinking, critical analysis and appropriate academic writing.

Degree students may choose to reside on or off campus.
